Some like it cool

We love working on smaller spaces because of the challenges they present, and the fun and interesting solutions that can come from brainstorming with our clients to see what would work best for them.  Our client felt that her Logan Township, New Jersey townhome needed some updating, along with better storage solutions, and improved finishes.  A high priority for her was replacing the plastic laminate floor in the main living areas, as well as the vinyl tiles in the kitchen.  Because her dog would scratch a real wood floor, we chose a durable LVT (luxury vinyl tile) product from Coretec. Among other attributes, this product doesn’t buckle when it gets wet, so it could be used in the kitchen and powder room as well as the main living areas, keeping the flooring all the same for a more homogenous look.  What we like about this wide plank, reclaimed-wood look is its relaxed, modern, yet timeless feel.  (See earlier product review below for more information).  We also decided to paint the entire first floor, stairwell and upstairs hall in the same off-white color to lighten the look and contrast with the flooring.     In the kitchen, we shifted around, added to, and upgraded many portions of this area in order to improve the space. First, we installed a wide pantry closet that relieved the burden of storage in the main part of the kitchen and the garage.  Next, we took out the soffit and stretched the cabinets all the way to the ceiling, increasing storage capacity and allowing the space to feel taller.  The client requested that we move the location of the stove to allow for a lazy susan in the corner vs. the existing “dead space” cabinet. The dishwasher was also moved over a little, and the peninsula was made longer to allow for a larger drawer base. Glass cabinets in the middle change up the look of the solid cabinets, and make the space feel bigger.  The countertops are an important choice in a kitchen, and we found a granite that adds a bit of color, without being too dark.  We then inserted a gray glass tile backsplash which contrasts nicely with the white cabinets and wood floors, and adds a sophisticated feel. Hardware is like the “jewelry” to a space, and we chose simple, modern, brushed nickel handles.  Because of it’s size, we decided not to put any pendant lighting in the kitchen, and instead opted for well-placed recessed lighting.         In the master bathroom, we replaced the acrylic tub and surround with a tiled shower and clear glass doors.   We inlaid a horizontal blue-green glass mosaic strip among the white subway tile and it is stunning. It gives this small space a spa-like feel.  The matte, grey porcelain tiles on the shower floor and bathroom floor continue the cool color palette.  A simple white vanity cabinet was installed, as well as a matching cabinet over the toilet, keeping the look crisp, simple and clean.  A blue-green paint color ties everything together.

 Last but not least, a new vanity, toilet, mirror and sconces in the powder room are a fresh addition to this lovely home.
