Stunning Kitchen Renovation: A Client’s Dream Realized

When we first met with our clients, they told us that they wanted to update the look of their kitchen, and asked us to basically, “make it pretty”.  One of the first things I noticed was the incredible view, but it was mostly blocked by a wall of cabinets. My first suggestion was to open that wall with expansive windows to bring the outdoors in.  Although initially hesitant, the clients were quickly on board after seeing the 3D rendering. Framing the windows and doors in black became a key design decision, drawing the eye to the stunning view beyond. This kitchen is a large space with a separate pantry closet, so removing the four upper cabinets didn’t impact functionality. I also recommended relocating the sink from the corner to the center of the windows on the back wall.  This adjustment further enhanced the layout as well as the experience one has when standing at the sink.

We extended the island, knowing that it would naturally become the gathering point for family and guests. Many small appliances are now hidden within cabinets with recessed doors to maintain clean lines and a clutter-free look. We added all new large appliances and outfitted the bar area with a beverage refrigerator, making the space as functional for entertaining as it is for daily use.

Instead of a large dining table, we created a built-in banquette and paired it with a smaller table for a cozy and inviting nook. The clients’ daughter loves to sit there and work when she’s home from college. For lighting, we incorporated a combination of recessed LED ceiling lights and under-cabinet strips—all on dimmers—to allow for flexible mood and task lighting throughout the space.  Black pendants over the island and a woven light fixture over the table add interest and texture to the space.

Proposed Design

The overall design is updated and elegant, yet comfortable and not overly formal.  Our aim was to evoke a bit of a European feel.  To that end, a soft green was chosen for the back wall of cabinets to reflect the view and add color to the space, while black accents throughout add visual punch and tie back to the black-framed windows. The backsplash is a simple cream tile with an accent feature behind the cooktop that acts as another focal point. We selected leathered quartzite countertops for their natural, unpolished beauty and built up the edge thickness on the island to balance its substantial size and enhance the kitchen’s high-end look. Decorative legs at the island’s corners add a touch of style and visually “hold up” the countertop.

Champagne-toned hardware brings warmth and sophistication to the space. Remote-controlled, linen Roman shades provide convenience and subtle texture. Natural woven and black barstools work well with the light fixture over the banquette table lend a casual, organic feel. To finish off the banquette area, we made use of two of the client’s chairs that were originally in the foyer.

The net result of all of these details is a quietly elegant space that the clients enjoy every day.  Whether it’s bird watching, entertaining a few friends by the pool or just observing how the leaves change with the seasons (oh, and let’s not forget meal prep and eating), our clients can enjoy their kitchen for many years to come.

Foyer Refresh: A Warm Welcome

In the foyer, the client wanted to make a stronger first impression as you enter the home and update the staircase, which is situated directly across from the front door.  All of the wood flooring was refinished to a warmer tone, while the stair treads and railings were given a bold new look in a black stain. We eliminated the large niche and installed custom wainscoting and new sconces along the stair wall. The newel posts, carpet, and balusters were all replaced to give the staircase a fresh, cohesive look.

A carefully sourced antique French chest now anchors the space beneath the stairs, and a trio of client-selected artwork completes the vignette—creating a welcoming and sophisticated entry to the home.
